This new instructional approach gives students in grades 6-12 an opportunity to learn mathematics content and process TEKS, ELA TEKS, and develop their critical thinking skills at the same time.  The academy is designed to prepare participants to lead an 9-hour professional development workshop for teachers in their collaboratives. Academy participants will:

  • Learn how mathematical investigations can enable students to learn mathematics content and process TEKS, ELA TEKS, and how to think mathematically while fostering positive attitudes towards math.
  • Experience an Argument-Driven Mathematics lesson first hand.
  • Discuss ways to provide an educative professional learning experience for teachers, including strategies for promoting meaningful conversations among teachers and strategies for supporting teachers as they learn how to use a new instructional approach.

The 9-hour workshop for teachers focuses on topics including perimeter and area of composite shapes, mathematics process skills, mathematical thinking, and the nature of mathematical arguments. This workshop is designed for teachers in grades 8-12.  Each participate will receive a workshop facilitator kit. TEKS alignment will be made available upon request.
