Event Description

This workshop is organized by your trainer, Charles Hernandez - charles.hernandez@myhisd.net

Welcome to Launch_K5 CS, where education takes flight into a realm of innovation and possibilities! Launch_K5 CS is a dynamic 3-day hybrid workshop designed for K-5 educators, crafted to align seamlessly with the new K-5 Technology Applications TEKS set to be implemented in the 2024-2025 school year. Dive into an engaging experience that integrates computational thinking, computer science, cybersecurity, and AI into core curricula, offering educators a unique opportunity to enhance their teaching approaches.

Although teachers that teach students in both grade band options (K-2 and 3-5) are permitted to register for both grade band-specific training, we are only able to give each teacher one physical computing kit - either the micro:bits OR the VEX and not both.

The breakdown for the sessions will go as follows:

  • Friday November 22, 2024 - K-5 teachers - in-person training.
  • Saturday November 23, 2024 - K-2 teachers - in-person training.
  • Sunday November 24, 2024 - 3-5 teachers - in-person training.
  • Monday November 25, 2024 - K-5 (all) hybrid training (asynchronous)

The Launch_K5 CS program is designed to:

  • Immerse educators in a 3-day hybrid workshop, equipping them with the skills to seamlessly integrate computer science into their teaching practices
  • Align teaching strategies with the latest Technology Applications TEKS, ensuring curriculum is up-to-date and in line with educational standards
  • Explore a comprehensive set of K-5 lessons, including both unplugged and plugged activities, ready for immediate implementation in the classroom.
  • Embrace the future of education by learning about block-based coding and physical computing, essential skills for preparing students for the digital age

Upon completion of this workshop, K-2nd grade teachers will receive a set of 2 Vex 123 robots, and 3-5 teachers will receive a set of 10 micro:bits to take back to their classrooms.
