Event Description

Mathematical Argumentation in Middle School - The What, Why and How

Facilitated by Jennifer Knudsen and Teresa Lara-Meloy of SRI Education

Authors, Jennifer and Teresa will immerse you in part of the professional development they have designed to help teachers learn new practices to support mathematical argumentation in their classrooms. They will share a four-part model of argumentation, along with teaching moves specific to each part. Teacher leaders will learn how to use teaching “games” to help teachers develop the ability to react to novel student responses—the kind of disciplined improvisation called for in a discourse-rich classroom. Leaders will experience the role of improv warm up games in establishing positive norms for argumentation, designed to be used both in PD and in the classroom.  Tasks from various strands in middle school mathematics will be utilized, both with and without computing technology.
